School Polytunnel

8th Apr 2025

Mr Gallaghers 4th class have been fierce busy in the polytunnel since September. We did lots of weeding in September and cleared all of the beds from the summer. There were some delicious cabbages and potatoes still growing which the children took home for dinner and lunch.

We planted some salad leaves in propagation trays and waited until they were big enough to put into the beds. We then put them into the beds and have reaped the rewards with some lovely fresh rocket, chard, mustard plant and other green leaves now growing in the tunnel.

We also sourced some garlic from the organic centre in Rossinver and planted them in November, they are currently in the ground and will hopefully be ready to harvest before June.We also planted some red Barron onions with Cliffoney National school as part of the ASPIRE peace programme. Recently we planted strawberries, savoy cabbage and lettuce. The organic centre also very generously sent us out some seeds and we’ve put lettuce, radish, basil, parsley ,tomatoes and carrots in propagation trays to get ready to go into the beds soon.

The recent good weather has seen some great growing spurts and the plants are diligently watered by the children in 4th class on a daily basis. The children are enjoying the work, eating the greens and learning about how to grow all the different plants and vegetables in the tunnel.
