On Friday last, 16th June, we had a great day in the Ulster American Folk Park! Part of our study this year was on ‘The Great Irish Famine’ and what better way to consolidate our learning but to see this ‘live history’. Here we journeyed back in time and followed in the footsteps of the thousands of emigrants who emigrated from our shores to North America in the 18th and 19th centuries. We learned what life was like by taking a look at the traditional farmhouses, listening to the talented costumed guides and stepping on board the emigrant ship, experiencing what the cramped quarters were like on the dangerous journey to America, until we emerged into the ‘New World’.
